Before investing on making a particular website, it is often a good idea to experiment with various open source platforms available. Recently, I was thinking about making my own website. But before investing any money on them, I decided to experiment with them and gain some familiarity in using them.
First of all, let me introduce different types of websites (based on these open source platforms):

- Wordpress : It is mainly used by bloggers and it has lots of tools and plugins suitable for blogging.
- Vanilla : It is based on discussion forums. So by installing or using Vanilla as your website platform you can have a discussion website up and running very quickly.
- Moodle : This platform is generally utilized by universities and schools. It has course management features and plugins.
- Drupal : Here is how drupal.org defines its objectives -"Drupal is an open source content management platform powering millions of websites and applications. It’s built, used, and supported by an active and diverse community of people around the world".
